A new state law that regulates the placement of septic tanks will likely limit new construction in a large geographic areas of rural Somerset County, planning officials said Tuesday.

The law is the most restrictive in agricultural-residential areas that will be not served by public sewer systems.

Counties are required to map the land into four tiers ranging from the least restrictive areas to the most restrictive.

1st tier will include areas that have already got a public sewer.

2nd tier will be areas where sewer is planned in the next 10 years.

3rd tier is mainly for large plot development.

4th tier will be the most restrictive and will cover most of Somerset County.

Somerset County staff members have apparently created rough maps and will be sending them off to the Planning Commission who will begin refining them for final approval in September by the County Commissioners.
