Want some Advice on Septic tanks

When installing a new septic tank you must make sure you install the septic tank at least 15m from your home and within 10m of a vehicle access point. This makes it easy for us to perform a septic tank emptying service as access to the chamber will be easy. Do not build on a slope as the septic tanks drain field could be releasing the waste water to the adjoining landowner.

What should a new septic tank come with?

The tank should have at least two chambers, which will need to operate in series. All materials used to help assembly the tank should be able to prevent leaking and ingress of subsoil water. The tank itself must be made from suitable material and be sound in structure. Most tanks will have a BBA certificate. It is also easy to forget when installing pipe work to make it easy to access, this makes jobs like desludging and drain repairs a lot cheaper if anything were to happen.

But before you go and install a septic tank you must make sure the drainfield is able to soak up the water. To test the area in which you want the drainfield to be you must do a soakaway test; this is where we would come with either a towable bowser or our massive 6,000 gallon tanker. This really depends on the size of the drainfield which is normally calculated is the number of people living in the property or the number of people at the site. The soakaway test is where fresh clean water is poured into the ground where it is timed to see how fast the water is soaked up. If the water takes too long to drain away or does not drain at all then you will not be allowed to build the drainfield there.

Don’t worry if the water does not drain away fast enough or at all, there are solutions. The main cause for water to drain slowly or not at all is there could be a layer of clay under the soil. You can get the soil check to see how big the layer of clay is. There are some solutions for clay but I would recommend finding a different spot.

When you have your new septic tank installed remember to have at least one septic tank empty a year. Tardis Environmental can provide a scheduled septic tank emptying service.
